The far-infrared vibration–rotation–tunneling spectrum of the water tetramer-d8

چکیده
The far-infrared vibration–rotation–tunneling spectrum of ~D2O!4 has been measured in the spectral region near 2.04 THz. Observation of additional transition doublets with a constant 5.6 MHz spacing in a parallel ~c-type! spectrum extends the first detailed study of this cluster @Science 271, 59 ~1996!#. Three possibilities are explored for the origin of this small splitting: tunneling between degenerate equilibrium structures via facile torsional motions analogous to those observed in the water trimer, tunneling between nondegenerate structural frameworks, and tunneling made feasible only through excitation of a specific vibrational coordinate. The degenerate tunneling scheme best accounts for the spectral features, although the precise dynamics responsible for the observed spectral features cannot be uniquely established from the present data. A further doubling of spectral features, observed only in the K52 manifold of transitions for J>3, is symmetric about the unperturbed symmetric top energy levels and shows an approximate J dependence of the spacing. The origin of these additional splittings, which are shown to be present in both upper and lower vibrational states of the spectrum, is likely to be due to an interaction between overall rotational angular momentum and the type of internal motion ~‘‘pseudorotation’’! that gives rise to a manifold of low energy states in water trimer. The measured interoxygen separations in ~D2O!n ~n52,3,4,5! are analyzed in order to quantify the contribution of many-body forces in bulk water. An exponential contraction of this property toward the value found in ordered ice is observed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-9606~96!02540-8#

Terahertz vibration-rotation-tunneling spectroscopy of the water tetramer-d8: combined analysis of vibrational bands at 4.1 and 2.0 THz.
We report the measurement of terahertz vibration-rotation-tunneling spectra of (D(2)O)(4) in the spectral region near 4.13 THz. The characterization of this perpendicular band extends a previously reported study [J. Chem. Phys. 111, 7801 (1999)]. We observed 239 new transitions, each being split into a doublet of constant (approximately 192 MHz) spacing. These are included in a combined fit wit...
متن کاملTerahertz Laser Vibration-Rotation Tunneling Spectroscopy of the Water Tetramer
A vibration-rotation-tunneling (VRT) spectrum of (H2O)4 has been recorded near 2.04 THz (67.9 cm-1). The band origin of this ∆K ) 0 symmetric rotor spectrum is shifted by 0.1 cm-1 to the blue of that of a (D2O)4 band reported previously [Science, 1996, 271, 59]. Similar to that spectrum, each transition in the (H2O)4 spectrum exhibits a regular doublet splitting. The (D2O)4 and (H2O)4 doublet s...
متن کاملFar-infrared laser vibration–rotation–tunneling spectroscopy of water clusters in the librational band region of liquid water
We report the first high resolution spectrum of a librational vibration for a water cluster. Four parallel bands of (H2O)3 were measured between 510 and 525 cm 21 using diode laser vibration– rotation–tunneling ~VRT! spectroscopy. The bands lie in the ‘‘librational band’’ region of liquid water and are assigned to the nondegenerate out of plane librational vibration. The observation of at least...
متن کاملFar infrared vibration-rotation-tunneling spectroscopy and internal dynamics of methane--water: A prototypical hydrophobic system
Thirteen vibration-rotation-tunneling (VRT) bands of the CH4-H,O complex have been measured in the range from 18 to 35.5 cm-’ using tunable far infrared laser spectroscopy. The ground state has an average center of mass separation of 3.70 A and a stretching force constant of 1.52 N/m, indicating that this complex is more strongly bound than Ar-H,O. The eigenvalue spectrum has been calculated wi...
متن کاملWater pair and three-body potential of spectroscopic quality from Ab initio calculations
We present the first pair plus three-body potential of water from ab initio calculations that quantitatively reproduces the experimental far-infrared spectra of the water dimer and trimer. The dimer spectrum was obtained from the pair potential through rigorous six-dimensional quantum calculations of the vibration-rotation-tunneling levels. The three-body interactions, together with the pair po...
